Dr. Pamela Farris Book Donation
Book DonationFormer South Putnam Title 1 teacher and current author Dr. Pamela Farris donated over $15,000 of newly published children's books to Central Elementary and Fillmore Elementary for classroom use.

Dr. Pamela “Pam” Farris began her teaching career as the Title I Elementary Reading Director for South Putnam Schools which consisted of Belle Union, Fillmore, and Reelsville Elementary Schools.  She was hired by the late Mr. Jim Hammond, Superintendent, upon her graduation from Indiana State University, Magna Cum Laude.  While teaching at South Putnam schools, she obtained her Masters Degree in Reading from Indiana State University.  Pam left South Putnam Schools to pursue fulltime her Ph.D. in Reading and Language Arts at Indiana State University.  Dr. Farris has published over 200 articles in the field of literacy and education and is currently finishing her 25th book, Language Arts:  Process, Product and Assessment for Diverse Classrooms (6th ed.).  After serving as Distinguished Teaching Professor at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL, a scholarship was established in her name which gives four preservice teachers each year funding assistance to complete their degrees.  Dr. Farris went on to teach and conduct research at Illinois State University.

Each year Dr. Farris donates a classroom library to a teacher in a rural school in Illinois as part of the Illinois Reading Council.  Always a promoter of having students read quality children’s and young adult books, Dr. Farris has served as Midwest chair for the International Reading Association’s Children’s Choices and Teacher’s Choices project for ten years.

Dr. Farris delivered the books herself to excited students on Friday, August 10th.  She shared stories from her own life and from the lives of people around her.  She also encouraged the group to read every day. The donated books, written by a variety of authors, will be circulated in K-5 classrooms. As Dr. Farris stated, "Research demonstrates that greater reading growth is achieved when students have ready access to books within their classrooms."

Besides authoring professional books for teachers, Pam has authored three children’s and young adult books—Young Mouse and Elephant, Crossover Dribble, and Presidents from the Prairie State:  Lincoln, Grant, Reagan, and Obama.  Pam and her husband live in Rochelle, IL and winter in Arizona.
